Ingredients

1/2 cup moong dal
1 cup ripe mango, peeled and diced
2 cups water
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 tablespoon mustard oil
1 teaspoon sugar
salt to taste
2 green chilies, slit
1 teaspoon ghee
1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Dry roast the moong dal in a pan over medium heat until it turns light golden brown.
  2. 2 Wash the roasted dal thoroughly under running water.
  3. 3 In a pot, combine the washed dal, water, and turmeric powder. Bring to a boil.
  4. 4 Reduce the heat and simmer until the dal is cooked and soft.
  5. 5 In a separate pan, heat mustard oil and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  6. 6 Add the slit green chilies to the oil and sauté for a few seconds.
  7. 7 Add the diced mango to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly soft.
  8. 8 Add the cooked mango mixture to the pot of dal.
  9. 9 Stir in sugar and salt to taste, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
  10. 10 Finish with a teaspoon of ghee and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  11. 11 Serve hot with steamed rice.

Tips

For a more authentic flavor, use ripe yet firm mangoes to balance the sweetness and tanginess.
