Ingredients
| 1/2 cup | moong dal |
| 1 cup | ripe mango, peeled and diced |
| 2 cups | water |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 tablespoon | mustard oil |
| 1 teaspoon | sugar |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 | green chilies, slit |
| 1 teaspoon | ghee |
| 1 tablespoon | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Dry roast the moong dal in a pan over medium heat until it turns light golden brown.
- 2 Wash the roasted dal thoroughly under running water.
- 3 In a pot, combine the washed dal, water, and turmeric powder. Bring to a boil.
- 4 Reduce the heat and simmer until the dal is cooked and soft.
- 5 In a separate pan, heat mustard oil and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- 6 Add the slit green chilies to the oil and sauté for a few seconds.
- 7 Add the diced mango to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly soft.
- 8 Add the cooked mango mixture to the pot of dal.
- 9 Stir in sugar and salt to taste, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
- 10 Finish with a teaspoon of ghee and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- 11 Serve hot with steamed rice.
Tips
For a more authentic flavor, use ripe yet firm mangoes to balance the sweetness and tanginess.
