Ingredients

1 cup flaxseeds
1 tablespoon oil
2 tablespoons tamarind pulp
3 tablespoons jaggery
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoons chana dal
2 tablespoons urad dal
5-6 dried red chilies
1 pinch asafoetida
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup water

Instructions

  1. 1 Heat a pan on medium flame and dry roast the flaxseeds until they start to pop. Set aside to cool.
  2. 2 In the same pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, chana dal, urad dal, and dried red chilies.
  3. 3 Fry the mixture until the dals turn golden brown. Add asafoetida and remove from heat.
  4. 4 In a blender, combine the roasted flaxseeds, fried spice mixture, tamarind pulp, jaggery, salt, and water.
  5. 5 Blend until you get a smooth paste. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
  6. 6 Taste and adjust salt or jaggery according to preference.

Tips

Store the chutney in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
