Ingredients

5 pieces dried amla (Indian gooseberry)
1 cup grated coconut
4 cloves garlic
5 pieces dry red chilies
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 cup water
salt to taste

Instructions

  1. 1 Soak the dried amla in a cup of warm water for about 15 minutes until they soften.
  2. 2 In a pan, dry roast the coriander seeds and cumin seeds on low heat until aromatic.
  3. 3 Grind the grated coconut, roasted spices, garlic, dry red chilies, and turmeric powder into a smooth paste using a little water.
  4. 4 Heat coconut oil in a pan and add the ground paste. Sauté for a few minutes until the oil starts to separate.
  5. 5 Add the soaked amla along with the water they were soaked in. Stir well.
  6. 6 Add additional water to achieve the desired consistency and bring the mixture to a boil.
  7. 7 Simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. 8 Season with salt to taste and serve hot.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a small piece of jaggery to balance the tartness of the amla.
