Ingredients
| 1 cup | dried green peas |
| 1 tablespoon | oil |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida |
| 1 tablespoon | chana dal |
| 1 tablespoon | urad dal |
| 2 | green chilies, chopped |
| 1 | medium onion, finely chopped |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| to taste | salt |
| 2 tablespoons | grated coconut |
| 1 tablespoon | lemon juice |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Soak the dried green peas in water overnight or for at least 8 hours.
- 2 Drain the soaked peas and pressure cook them with enough water until soft but not mushy.
- 3 Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- 4 Add chana dal and urad dal, and fry until they turn golden brown.
- 5 Add chopped green chilies and onion, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
- 6 Stir in turmeric powder and red chili powder, and cook for another minute.
- 7 Add the cooked peas to the pan, mix well, and season with salt to taste.
- 8 Cook the mixture for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- 9 Turn off the heat and add grated coconut, lemon juice, and fresh coriander leaves.
- 10 Mix everything well and serve hot.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a small piece of ginger while sautéing the onions.
