Ingredients

1 cup chilka urad dal (split black gram with skin)
1 cup rice
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 green chilies, finely chopped
1 teaspoon ginger, grated
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
salt to taste
oil for cooking
2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash and soak the chilka urad dal and rice together in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked dal and rice, then grind them into a smooth batter using a little water. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter.
  3. 3 Transfer the batter to a bowl and add chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
  4. 4 Heat a non-stick pan or tawa over medium heat and drizzle some oil on it.
  5. 5 Pour a ladleful of batter onto the pan and spread it evenly to form a pancake.
  6. 6 Cook on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until crisp and cooked through.
  7. 7 Repeat the process with the remaining batter.
  8. 8 Serve the chilka daal pancakes hot, garnished with fresh coriander leaves.

Tips

For a spicier version, increase the number of green chilies. Serve with mint chutney or yogurt for a refreshing taste.
