Ingredients
1 cup | Black Gram Lentil |
2 tablespoons | Mustard oil |
1 teaspoon | Cumin , seeds |
1 pinch | Asafoetida |
1 teaspoon | Turmeric powder |
1 teaspoon | Red chili powder |
1 teaspoon | Coriander powder |
1 teaspoon | Salt |
3 cups | Water |
1 | Chili , green, chopped |
1 tablespoon | Cilantro , chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the black gram lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for at least 2 hours.
- 2 Drain the water from the soaked lentils.
- 3 In a deep pan, heat mustard oil until it starts to smoke slightly.
- 4 Add cumin seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
- 5 Add a pinch of asafoetida, followed by turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Stir quickly to avoid burning the spices.
- 6 Add the soaked lentils to the pan and stir well to coat them with the spices.
- 7 Pour in 3 cups of water and add salt to taste.
- 8 Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes, or until the lentils are cooked and the mixture thickens.
- 9 Add chopped green chili for heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
For a smoky flavor, you can add a piece of charcoal to the dish while it is simmering and cover the pan. Remove the charcoal before serving.
