Ingredients

Bread 4 slices Bread , white
butter 2 tablespoons Butter , unsalted
Flour 1 tablespoon Flour
Milk 1 cup Milk , whole
Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg , pinch of powder
Gruy Re Cheese 1 cup Gruy Re Cheese , grated
ham 4 slices Ham
salt Salt , to taste
Black Pepper Black Pepper , to taste

Instructions

  1. 1 Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. 2 In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  3. 3 Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a roux.
  4. 4 Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps, and cook until the sauce thickens.
  5. 5 Stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, then remove from heat.
  6. 6 Spread a thin layer of the béchamel sauce on two slices of bread.
  7. 7 Place two slices of ham on top of each slice of bread with béchamel.
  8. 8 Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese over the ham.
  9. 9 Top with the remaining slices of bread.
  10. 10 Spread the remaining béchamel sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle the rest of the Gruyère cheese over them.
  11. 11 Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  12. 12 Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  13. 13 Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
