1 cup | Milk , whole |

1 teaspoon | Dijon mustard |

1/4 teaspoon | Nutmeg , pinch of powder |

1 cup | Gruy Re Cheese , grated |

4 slices | Ham |
|

— | Black Pepper , to taste |
Instructions
- 1 Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 2 In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
- 3 Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a roux.
- 4 Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps, and cook until the sauce thickens.
- 5 Stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, then remove from heat.
- 6 Spread a thin layer of the béchamel sauce on two slices of bread.
- 7 Place two slices of ham on top of each slice of bread with béchamel.
- 8 Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese over the ham.
- 9 Top with the remaining slices of bread.
- 10 Spread the remaining béchamel sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle the rest of the Gruyère cheese over them.
- 11 Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- 12 Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
- 13 Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- 14 Serve hot.

For a Croque Madame, top each sandwich with a fried egg before serving.
