Ingredients

1 cup rice
1/2 cup chana dal
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon ginger paste
2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 green chili, finely chopped
salt to taste
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon curry leaves

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash and soak the rice and chana dal separately for 4-5 hours.
  2. 2 Drain the water and grind the rice into a smooth batter using minimal water.
  3. 3 Grind the chana dal coarsely and mix it with the rice batter.
  4. 4 Add cumin seeds, ginger paste, chopped coriander leaves, red chili powder, turmeric powder, green chili, and salt to the batter. Mix well.
  5. 5 Heat water in a steamer.
  6. 6 Grease your hands and shape the batter into small cylindrical dumplings.
  7. 7 Place the dumplings on a greased plate or banana leaf and steam them for 15-20 minutes until cooked.
  8. 8 In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  9. 9 Add curry leaves and the steamed dumplings. Sauté for a few minutes until they are lightly golden.
  10. 10 Serve hot with chutney or sauce of your choice.

Tips

For an enhanced taste, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering the mustard seeds.
