Ingredients
| 1 cup | rice |
| 1/2 cup | chana dal |
| 1/2 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | ginger paste |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| 1/2 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 | green chili, finely chopped |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 tablespoons | oil |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | curry leaves |
Instructions
- 1 Wash and soak the rice and chana dal separately for 4-5 hours.
- 2 Drain the water and grind the rice into a smooth batter using minimal water.
- 3 Grind the chana dal coarsely and mix it with the rice batter.
- 4 Add cumin seeds, ginger paste, chopped coriander leaves, red chili powder, turmeric powder, green chili, and salt to the batter. Mix well.
- 5 Heat water in a steamer.
- 6 Grease your hands and shape the batter into small cylindrical dumplings.
- 7 Place the dumplings on a greased plate or banana leaf and steam them for 15-20 minutes until cooked.
- 8 In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
- 9 Add curry leaves and the steamed dumplings. Sauté for a few minutes until they are lightly golden.
- 10 Serve hot with chutney or sauce of your choice.
Tips
For an enhanced taste, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering the mustard seeds.
