Ingredients

Horse Gram 1 cup Horse Gram
water 4 cups Water
mustard oil 1 tablespoon Mustard oil
Cumin 1 teaspoon Cumin , seeds
asafoetida 1 pinch Asafoetida
Onion 1 medium Onion , finely chopped
Tomato 1 medium Tomato , finely chopped
Garlic 2 cloves Garlic , minced
Ginger 1 inch Ginger , grated
turmeric powder 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
red chili powder 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
coriander powder 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
salt 1 Salt , to taste
Cilantro 1 tablespoon Cilantro , chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the gahat thoroughly and soak it in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked gahat and transfer it to a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
  3. 3 Pressure cook the gahat for 4-5 whistles or until it becomes soft.
  4. 4 In a pan, heat mustard oil and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  5. 5 Add a pinch of asafoetida, followed by chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  6. 6 Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for another minute.
  7. 7 Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
  8. 8 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
  9. 9 Add the cooked gahat along with its water to the pan. Stir well and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  10. 10 Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed and simmer for a few more minutes.
  11. 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of ghee while simmering the dal.
