1 tablespoon | Mustard oil |

1 teaspoon | Cumin , seeds |

1 pinch | Asafoetida |
|
1 medium | Onion , finely chopped |
|
1 medium | Tomato , finely chopped |
|
2 cloves | Garlic , minced |
|
1 inch | Ginger , grated |
|
1 teaspoon | Turmeric powder |
|
1 teaspoon | Red chili powder |
|
1 teaspoon | Coriander powder |
|
1 | Salt , to taste |
|
1 tablespoon | Cilantro , chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the gahat thoroughly and soak it in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
- 2 Drain the soaked gahat and transfer it to a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
- 3 Pressure cook the gahat for 4-5 whistles or until it becomes soft.
- 4 In a pan, heat mustard oil and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
- 5 Add a pinch of asafoetida, followed by chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- 6 Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for another minute.
- 7 Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
- 8 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
- 9 Add the cooked gahat along with its water to the pan. Stir well and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- 10 Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed and simmer for a few more minutes.
- 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of ghee while simmering the dal.
