Ingredients
| 1 cup | gahat (horse gram) |
| 4 cups | water |
| 1 medium | onion, finely chopped |
| 2 cloves | garlic, minced |
| 1 inch | ginger, grated |
| 1 medium | tomato, chopped |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| 2 tablespoons | mustard oil |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the gahat thoroughly and soak it in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
- 2 Drain the soaked gahat and transfer it to a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
- 3 Pressure cook the gahat for about 3-4 whistles or until it becomes soft.
- 4 In a separate pan, heat mustard oil over medium heat.
- 5 Add cumin seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
- 6 Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- 7 Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute.
- 8 Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and red chili powder, and cook until the tomatoes soften.
- 9 Add the cooked gahat along with its water to the pan, and mix well.
- 10 Season with salt to taste and let the soup simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- 11 Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering the cumin seeds.
