Ingredients

1 cup gahat (horse gram)
4 cups water
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
2 tablespoons mustard oil
salt to taste
2 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the gahat thoroughly and soak it in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked gahat and transfer it to a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
  3. 3 Pressure cook the gahat for about 3-4 whistles or until it becomes soft.
  4. 4 In a separate pan, heat mustard oil over medium heat.
  5. 5 Add cumin seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
  6. 6 Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  7. 7 Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute.
  8. 8 Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and red chili powder, and cook until the tomatoes soften.
  9. 9 Add the cooked gahat along with its water to the pan, and mix well.
  10. 10 Season with salt to taste and let the soup simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  11. 11 Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while tempering the cumin seeds.
