Ingredients
| 2 cups | all-purpose flour |
| 1 teaspoon | salt |
| 1 tablespoon | olive oil |
| 1 teaspoon | sugar |
| 1 teaspoon | active dry yeast |
| 3/4 cup | warm water |
Instructions
- 1 In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in 1/4 cup of the warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2 In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- 3 Add the yeast mixture, olive oil, and the remaining warm water to the flour mixture.
- 4 Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5 Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 6 Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet or stone inside to heat.
- 7 Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
- 8 Place the dough circles on the hot baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the pita bread puffs up and is lightly golden.
- 9 Remove from the oven and cover with a clean towel to keep them soft.
Tips
For softer pita, brush with olive oil before baking.
