Ingredients
| 1/2 cup | hesaru bele (moong dal) |
| 1 small | tomato |
| 1 small | onion |
| 2 cloves | garlic |
| 1 inch | ginger |
| 2 cups | water |
| 1 tsp | tamarind paste |
| 1 tsp | jaggery |
| 1 tsp | coriander powder |
| 1/2 tsp | turmeric powder |
| 1 tsp | mustard seeds |
| 1 tsp | cumin seeds |
| 2 tbsp | oil |
| — | salt to taste |
| 1 handful | coriander leaves |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 10 minutes.
- 2 Chop the tomato, onion, garlic, and ginger finely.
- 3 In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
- 4 Once the seeds splutter, add asafoetida and chopped garlic and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
- 5 Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- 6 Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft.
- 7 Drain the soaked moong dal and add it to the cooker.
- 8 Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt to taste.
- 9 Pour in 2 cups of water and add the tamarind paste and jaggery.
- 10 Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the dal is cooked well.
- 11 Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mix well.
- 12 Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of ghee while serving.
