Ingredients

1/2 cup hesaru bele (moong dal)
1 small tomato
1 small onion
2 cloves garlic
1 inch ginger
2 cups water
1 tsp tamarind paste
1 tsp jaggery
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp oil
salt to taste
1 handful coriander leaves
1 pinch asafoetida

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 10 minutes.
  2. 2 Chop the tomato, onion, garlic, and ginger finely.
  3. 3 In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  4. 4 Once the seeds splutter, add asafoetida and chopped garlic and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
  5. 5 Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  6. 6 Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft.
  7. 7 Drain the soaked moong dal and add it to the cooker.
  8. 8 Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt to taste.
  9. 9 Pour in 2 cups of water and add the tamarind paste and jaggery.
  10. 10 Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the dal is cooked well.
  11. 11 Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mix well.
  12. 12 Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of ghee while serving.
