Ingredients

Horse Gram 1 cup Horse Gram , huruli
Onion 1 medium Onion , finely chopped
Tomato 1 medium Tomato , finely chopped
Garlic 2 cloves Garlic , minced
Ginger 1 inch Ginger , minced
Tamarind 2 tablespoons Tamarind , pulp
Mustard Seed 1 teaspoon Mustard Seed
Cumin 1 teaspoon Cumin , seeds
turmeric powder 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
red chili powder 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
coriander powder 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
jaggery 1 teaspoon Jaggery
salt Salt , to taste
oil 2 tablespoons Oil
Curry Leaf 1 handful Curry Leaf
Cilantro 2 tablespoons Cilantro , fresh, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the horse gram thoroughly and soak it in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked horse gram and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water until soft (about 3-4 whistles).
  3. 3 In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, minced garlic, and ginger.
  4. 4 Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
  5. 5 Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft.
  6. 6 Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  7. 7 Add the cooked horse gram along with its water, tamarind pulp, and jaggery. Mix well.
  8. 8 Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  9. 9 Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.

Tips

For a richer taste, you can add a teaspoon of ghee just before serving.
