Ingredients
| 1 cup | horse gram (huruli) |
| 1 tablespoon | coconut oil |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | urad dal |
| 1 teaspoon | chana dal |
| 2 | dried red chilies |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida (hing) |
| 1 | curry leaf sprig |
| 1 cup | grated fresh coconut |
| 1 teaspoon | jaggery |
| 1 | lemon |
| — | salt to taste |
| — | water as needed |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the horse gram thoroughly and soak it in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
- 2 Drain the soaked horse gram and transfer it to a pressure cooker.
- 3 Add enough water to the pressure cooker to cover the horse gram and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until soft.
- 4 In a pan, heat coconut oil over medium heat.
- 5 Add mustard seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
- 6 Add urad dal and chana dal to the pan and sauté until golden brown.
- 7 Add dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves, and sauté for a few seconds.
- 8 Add the cooked horse gram to the pan and mix well.
- 9 Add grated coconut, jaggery, and salt to taste. Stir everything together.
- 10 Cook for a few minutes until the flavors combine well.
- 11 Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the usli and mix well.
- 12 Serve hot as a snack or side dish.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of ghee at the end before serving.
