Ingredients

1/2 cup kadalai paruppu (chana dal)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
2 dried red chilies
1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
1 sprig curry leaves
1 cup grated coconut
1 small tamarind piece
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. 1 Dry roast the kadalai paruppu in a pan on medium heat until golden brown. Set aside to cool.
  2. 2 In the same pan, heat vegetable oil and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  3. 3 Add urad dal, dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Fry until the urad dal turns golden.
  4. 4 In a blender, combine the roasted kadalai paruppu, fried spice mixture, grated coconut, tamarind piece, and salt.
  5. 5 Add water gradually and blend to a smooth consistency.
  6. 6 Adjust the consistency with additional water if necessary and check seasoning.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of sesame oil while blending.
