Ingredients

1/4 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
1/4 cup jaggery
1 cup coconut milk
1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
1 tablespoon ghee
8-10 cashew nuts
8-10 raisins
1 pinch salt
2 cups water

Instructions

  1. 1 Rinse the chana dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 15 minutes.
  2. 2 Drain the water and pressure cook the chana dal with 2 cups of water for 2-3 whistles until it is soft but not mushy.
  3. 3 Once the pressure releases, open the lid and add jaggery to the cooked dal. Stir well until the jaggery dissolves completely.
  4. 4 Add coconut milk and cardamom powder to the dal mixture. Mix well and let it simmer on low heat for about 5-7 minutes.
  5. 5 In a small pan, heat ghee and fry the cashew nuts until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  6. 6 In the same ghee, fry the raisins until they puff up. Remove and set aside.
  7. 7 Add the fried cashew nuts and raisins to the payasa and mix well.
  8. 8 Add a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness and mix thoroughly.
  9. 9 Serve the kadle bele payasa warm or at room temperature.

Tips

Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of jaggery as per your taste.
