Ingredients
| 500 grams | kallumakkaya (mussels) |
| 2 tablespoons | coconut oil |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 cup | onion, finely sliced |
| 2 teaspoons | ginger-garlic paste |
| 2 teaspoons | red chili powder |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | black pepper powder |
| 1 teaspoon | fennel powder |
| 1 teaspoon | garam masala |
| 1 | lemon, juiced |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 sprigs | curry leaves |
| 2 tablespoons | coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Clean the kallumakkaya (mussels) thoroughly under running water and set aside.
- 2 Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- 3 Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- 4 Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
- 5 Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder, fennel powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
- 6 Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and stir to coat them with the spice mixture.
- 7 Season with salt and add curry leaves. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mussels are cooked and the spices are well absorbed.
- 8 Squeeze lemon juice over the mussels and mix well.
- 9 Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
