Ingredients

chana dal 1 cup Chana dal
oil 1 tablespoon Oil
Mustard Seed 1 teaspoon Mustard Seed
Cumin 1 teaspoon Cumin , seeds
asafoetida 1 pinch Asafoetida
Coconut 2 tablespoons Coconut , grated
red chili powder 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
turmeric powder 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
garam masala 1 teaspoon Garam masala
Tamarind 1 tablespoon Tamarind , pulp
jaggery 1 teaspoon Jaggery
salt 1 Salt , to taste
Cilantro 2 tablespoons Cilantro , chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Rinse the chana dal thoroughly and soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked dal and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water until soft but not mushy.
  3. 3 In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  4. 4 Add the cooked chana dal to the pan along with the water it was cooked in.
  5. 5 Stir in grated coconut, red chili powder, turmeric powder, god masala, tamarind pulp, and jaggery.
  6. 6 Season with salt to taste and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the flavors meld together.
  7. 7 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

Adjust the consistency of the amti by adding more water if needed. It should be slightly thick but pourable.
