Ingredients

1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
2 cups water
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 tablespoon tamarind pulp
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoons oil
1 pinch asafoetida
1 handful curry leaves
1 handful fresh coriander leaves, chopped
salt to taste

Instructions

  1. 1 Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water.
  2. 2 In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt.
  3. 3 Pressure cook the dal for 3-4 whistles until it becomes soft and mushy.
  4. 4 In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  5. 5 Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves to the pan and sauté for a few seconds.
  6. 6 Add chopped onions and garlic to the pan and sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  7. 7 Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.
  8. 8 Add red chili powder and mix well.
  9. 9 Pour the cooked dal into the pan, mix thoroughly, and bring it to a gentle boil.
  10. 10 Add tamarind pulp and adjust salt to taste. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  11. 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Adjust the amount of tamarind pulp according to your taste preference for sourness.
