Ingredients
| 1 cup | toor dal (pigeon peas) |
| 2 cups | water |
| 1 medium | tomato, chopped |
| 1 small | onion, chopped |
| 2 cloves | garlic, minced |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| 1 tablespoon | tamarind pulp |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 2 tablespoons | oil |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida |
| 1 handful | curry leaves |
| 1 handful | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |

Instructions
- 1 Rinse the toor dal thoroughly under running water.
- 2 In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt.
- 3 Pressure cook the dal for 3-4 whistles until it becomes soft and mushy.
- 4 In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- 5 Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves to the pan and sauté for a few seconds.
- 6 Add chopped onions and garlic to the pan and sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- 7 Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.
- 8 Add red chili powder and mix well.
- 9 Pour the cooked dal into the pan, mix thoroughly, and bring it to a gentle boil.
- 10 Add tamarind pulp and adjust salt to taste. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
- 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Adjust the amount of tamarind pulp according to your taste preference for sourness.
