Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 packet instant yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup warm water
1 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
vegetable oil for frying
crushed walnuts for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1 In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. 2 Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  3. 3 Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. 4 While the dough is rising, prepare the syrup by combining honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  5. 5 Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside to cool.
  6. 6 Once the dough has risen, heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat.
  7. 7 Using a spoon, drop small portions of the dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on all sides.
  8. 8 Remove the loukoumades with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. 9 Dip the warm loukoumades into the honey syrup, ensuring they are well coated.
  10. 10 Arrange on a serving plate, sprinkle with ground cinnamon and crushed walnuts if desired.
  11. 11 Serve immediately while warm and crispy.

Tips

For a more aromatic syrup, add a cinnamon stick or a few cloves while simmering.
