Ingredients
| 1 cup | all-purpose flour |
| 1 packet | instant yeast |
| 1 tablespoon | sugar |
| 1/4 teaspoon | salt |
| 3/4 cup | warm water |
| 1 cup | honey |
| 1/2 cup | water |
| 1 teaspoon | lemon juice |
| 1/2 teaspoon | ground cinnamon |
| — | vegetable oil for frying |
| — | crushed walnuts for garnish (optional) |
Instructions
- 1 In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
- 2 Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
- 3 Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 4 While the dough is rising, prepare the syrup by combining honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
- 5 Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside to cool.
- 6 Once the dough has risen, heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat.
- 7 Using a spoon, drop small portions of the dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on all sides.
- 8 Remove the loukoumades with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 9 Dip the warm loukoumades into the honey syrup, ensuring they are well coated.
- 10 Arrange on a serving plate, sprinkle with ground cinnamon and crushed walnuts if desired.
- 11 Serve immediately while warm and crispy.
Tips
For a more aromatic syrup, add a cinnamon stick or a few cloves while simmering.
