The sacred Bohri nazr (offering) sweet — crumbled phulka or wheat bread kneaded with clarified ghee, crushed jaggery or sugar, dry fruits (raisins, almonds, pistachios), cardamom, and dessicated coconut into a crumbly, moist, intensely fragrant mass. Made and distributed at milads, aqiqahs, and family religious occasions. The most distinctly Bohri sweet in existence.

Ingredients

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup jaggery
1/4 cup ghee
1/4 cup mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)
1/4 cup raisins
1 teaspoon cardamom powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. 1 Dry roast the whole wheat flour in a pan on low heat until it turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma. This should take about 10-12 minutes. Stir continuously to avoid burning.
  2. 2 In a separate pan, melt the ghee and add the mixed nuts. Fry them until they are golden brown, then remove and set aside.
  3. 3 In the same ghee, add the raisins and fry until they puff up. Remove and set aside with the nuts.
  4. 4 In a pot, add jaggery with a little water and heat until it melts completely. Strain to remove impurities if necessary.
  5. 5 Mix the roasted flour with the melted jaggery, stirring continuously to combine well.
  6. 6 Add the fried nuts, raisins, cardamom powder, and salt to the mixture. Stir until everything is well incorporated.
  7. 7 Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then break it into small pieces or shape into balls as desired.

Tips

For added texture, you can add grated coconut to the mixture.
