Ingredients
| 1 cup | yellow moong dal |
| 3 cups | water |
| 1 medium | onion, finely chopped |
| 2 medium | tomatoes, finely chopped |
| 1 inch | ginger, grated |
| 2 cloves | garlic, minced |
| 2 tablespoons | ghee |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida |
| 1 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| 1 teaspoon | coriander powder |
| 1 teaspoon | garam masala |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Rinse the moong dal thoroughly under running water and soak it in water for 20 minutes.
- 2 In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal and 3 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft.
- 3 Heat ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and let them splutter.
- 4 Add asafoetida, followed by chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- 5 Add ginger and garlic, and sauté for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
- 6 Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
- 7 Mix in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for 2 minutes.
- 8 Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
- 9 Simmer the dal for 5-7 minutes on low heat. Stir in garam masala and mix well.
- 10 Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
Tips
Serve hot with steamed rice or chapati for a complete meal.
