Ingredients

Toor Dal 1/2 cup Toor Dal
Mango 1 medium Mango , raw
Onion 1 small Onion , thinly sliced
Green Chili 2 Green Chili , slit
turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
Mustard Seed 1 teaspoon Mustard Seed
Cumin 1 teaspoon Cumin , seeds
Red Chili 2 Red Chili , dried
asafoetida 1 pinch Asafoetida
Curry Leaf 1 sprig Curry Leaf
oil 2 tablespoons Oil
salt Salt , to taste
water 2 cups Water
Cilantro 2 tablespoons Cilantro , chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. 2 Peel and chop the raw mango into small cubes.
  3. 3 Chop the onion and slit the green chilies.
  4. 4 In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, chopped mango, onion, green chilies, turmeric powder, and 2 cups of water.
  5. 5 Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked.
  6. 6 Once the pressure releases, mash the dal and mango mixture slightly and add salt to taste.
  7. 7 In a small pan, heat oil over medium heat.
  8. 8 Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  9. 9 Add cumin seeds, dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves, and sauté for a few seconds.
  10. 10 Pour this tempering over the cooked dal and mix well.
  11. 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

Adjust the quantity of mango based on its sourness to balance the flavors.
