Ingredients
| 1/2 cup | toor dal (pigeon peas) |
| 1 medium | raw mango |
| 1 small | onion |
| 2 | green chilies |
| 1/4 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | mustard seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 2 | dried red chilies |
| 1 pinch | asafoetida (hing) |
| 1 sprig | curry leaves |
| 2 tablespoons | oil |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 cups | water |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander leaves |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- 2 Peel and chop the raw mango into small cubes.
- 3 Chop the onion and slit the green chilies.
- 4 In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, chopped mango, onion, green chilies, turmeric powder, and 2 cups of water.
- 5 Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked.
- 6 Once the pressure releases, mash the dal and mango mixture slightly and add salt to taste.
- 7 In a small pan, heat oil over medium heat.
- 8 Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- 9 Add cumin seeds, dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves, and sauté for a few seconds.
- 10 Pour this tempering over the cooked dal and mix well.
- 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
Adjust the quantity of mango based on its sourness to balance the flavors.
