Ingredients
| 1 cup | split black gram (urad dal) |
| 3 cups | water |
| 1 tbsp | ghee |
| 1 tsp | cumin seeds |
| 1 medium | onion, finely chopped |
| 1 medium | tomato, finely chopped |
| 1 tsp | ginger-garlic paste |
| 1 tsp | turmeric powder |
| 1 tsp | red chili powder |
| 1 tsp | coriander powder |
| 1 tsp | garam masala |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 tbsp | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the split black gram thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- 2 Drain the water and set the soaked dal aside.
- 3 Heat ghee in a pressure cooker over medium heat.
- 4 Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- 5 Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- 6 Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
- 7 Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.
- 8 Mix in the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt.
- 9 Add the soaked dal and mix well to combine with the spices.
- 10 Pour in 3 cups of water and stir.
- 11 Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- 12 Let the pressure release naturally before opening the lid.
- 13 Stir in the garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- 14 Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a dollop of butter on top before serving.
