Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup split black gram (urad dal)
3 cups water
1 tbsp ghee
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp garam masala
salt to taste
2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the split black gram thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. 2 Drain the water and set the soaked dal aside.
  3. 3 Heat ghee in a pressure cooker over medium heat.
  4. 4 Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  5. 5 Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  6. 6 Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
  7. 7 Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.
  8. 8 Mix in the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt.
  9. 9 Add the soaked dal and mix well to combine with the spices.
  10. 10 Pour in 3 cups of water and stir.
  11. 11 Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
  12. 12 Let the pressure release naturally before opening the lid.
  13. 13 Stir in the garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  14. 14 Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a dollop of butter on top before serving.
