Ingredients
| 1 cup | masoor dal (red lentils) |
| 3 cups | water |
| 1 tbsp | mustard oil |
| 1 tsp | panch phoron (Bengali five spice) |
| 1 medium | onion, finely chopped |
| 1 medium | tomato, chopped |
| 1 tsp | turmeric powder |
| 1 tsp | red chili powder |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 | green chilies, slit |
| 2 tbsp | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Rinse the masoor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
- 2 In a pot, combine the rinsed dal with 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
- 3 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to the boiling dal.
- 4 Lower the heat and let it simmer until the dal is cooked and soft, about 20 minutes.
- 5 In a separate pan, heat mustard oil over medium heat.
- 6 Add panch phoron to the hot oil and let it sizzle for a few seconds.
- 7 Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- 8 Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
- 9 Add the slit green chilies and sauté for another minute.
- 10 Pour the onion-tomato mixture into the cooked dal and stir well.
- 11 Simmer the dal for another 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
- 12 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
For a richer flavor, add a teaspoon of ghee on top before serving.
