Naga Sweet Sticky Rice
Veg
Vegan
Glutinous rice mixed with toasted black sesame seeds and a little jaggery or honey, steamed in a banana leaf until dense and slightly sweet — a simple festival preparation made at the Hornbill Festival and harvest celebrations. Without a strong sweets tradition, this sesame-and-jaggery sticky rice is the closest Naga cooking comes to a dessert.

Ingredients
| 1 cup | sticky rice |
| 1 cup | coconut milk |
| 2 tablespoons | sugar |
| 1/4 teaspoon | salt |
| 1 teaspoon | sesame seeds |
| 1 tablespoon | grated coconut |
| 2 cups | water |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the sticky rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
- 2 Soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes, then drain.
- 3 In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- 4 Add the soaked rice to the boiling water, reduce the heat to low, and cover the pot.
- 5 Cook the rice for about 20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- 6 In a separate saucepan, combine the coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 7 Once the rice is cooked, pour the coconut milk mixture over the rice and stir well.
- 8 Cover the pot again and let it sit for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- 9 In a small pan, toast the sesame seeds until golden brown.
- 10 Serve the sweet sticky rice warm, garnished with toasted sesame seeds and grated coconut.
Tips
For a more authentic flavor, you can use banana leaves to wrap the rice while it cooks.
