Ingredients

1 cup | Moong Dal , split yellow |

1 cup | Urad dal |
|
2 tablespoons | Rice flour |
|
1 medium | Onion , finely chopped |
|
2 tablespoons | Cilantro , finely chopped |
|
2 | Chili , finely chopped |
|
1 teaspoon | Cumin , seeds |
|
1 teaspoon | Ginger , grated |
|
1 pinch | Asafoetida |
|
— | Salt , to taste |
|
— | Oil , for deep frying |
Instructions
- 1 Wash and soak the moong dal and urad dal together in water for 3-4 hours.
- 2 Drain the water and grind the dals to a coarse paste without adding much water.
- 3 Transfer the paste to a mixing bowl and add rice flour, chopped onion, coriander leaves, green chilies, cumin seeds, grated ginger, asafoetida, and salt.
- 4 Mix well to form a thick batter.
- 5 Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
- 6 Take a small portion of the batter, flatten it slightly, and make a small hole in the center.
- 7 Carefully slide it into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.
- 8 Repeat with the remaining batter.
- 9 Drain the garelu on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- 10 Serve hot with coconut chutney or ginger chutney.
Tips
Ensure the batter is thick to prevent the garelu from absorbing excess oil.
