Ingredients

1/4 cup yellow moong dal (pesarapappu)
2 cups water
1/2 cup jaggery
1 cup coconut milk
1 tablespoon ghee
1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
8-10 cashew nuts
8-10 raisins
1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. 1 Dry roast the yellow moong dal in a pan until it turns light golden and aromatic.
  2. 2 Rinse the roasted moong dal under running water and drain.
  3. 3 In a saucepan, add the rinsed moong dal and 2 cups of water. Cook until the dal is soft and mushy.
  4. 4 Add jaggery to the cooked dal and stir until it dissolves completely.
  5. 5 Pour in the coconut milk and mix well. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes.
  6. 6 In a separate small pan, heat ghee and fry the cashew nuts until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  7. 7 In the same ghee, fry the raisins until they puff up. Remove and set aside.
  8. 8 Add cardamom powder and a pinch of salt to the payasam. Stir well.
  9. 9 Garnish the payasam with fried cashew nuts and raisins before serving.

Tips

For a richer taste, you can use full-fat coconut milk.
