Ingredients

1/2 cup yellow moong dal (pesarapappu)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
2 cups tamarind water
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 whole dried red chilies
1 pinch asafoetida
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon jaggery
salt to taste
1 handful curry leaves
2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the yellow moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. 2 Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  3. 3 Once they splutter, add crushed garlic, dried red chilies, and asafoetida.
  4. 4 Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  5. 5 Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
  6. 6 Drain the soaked moong dal and add it to the pan.
  7. 7 Pour in the tamarind water and mix well.
  8. 8 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, jaggery, and salt to taste.
  9. 9 Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer until the dal is cooked and the flavors meld together.
  10. 10 Add curry leaves and let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
  11. 11 Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Serve with hot rice for a comforting meal.
