Ingredients

1 cup rice flour
1/2 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
1 cup water
1 tablespoon mustard oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon green chili paste
1 salt to taste
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash and soak the chana dal in water for 2 hours. Drain and set aside.
  2. 2 In a pan, heat mustard oil and add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  3. 3 Add ginger paste and green chili paste, sauté for a minute.
  4. 4 Add the soaked chana dal, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the dal is cooked but still firm.
  5. 5 Add chopped coriander leaves, mix well, and remove from heat. Let it cool slightly.
  6. 6 In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add hot water, stirring continuously to form a smooth dough.
  7. 7 Divide the dough into small balls. Flatten each ball into a disc and place a spoonful of the chana dal filling in the center.
  8. 8 Fold the edges over the filling to form a semi-circle and seal the edges by pressing gently.
  9. 9 Steam the pitthas in a steamer for 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through.
  10. 10 Serve warm with chutney or sauce of your choice.

Tips

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while sautéing the spices.
