Ingredients
| 1 cup | rice flour |
| 1/2 cup | chana dal (split Bengal gram) |
| 1 cup | water |
| 1 tablespoon | mustard oil |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 1 teaspoon | ginger paste |
| 1 teaspoon | green chili paste |
| 1 | salt to taste |
| 1/4 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 tablespoon | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash and soak the chana dal in water for 2 hours. Drain and set aside.
- 2 In a pan, heat mustard oil and add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- 3 Add ginger paste and green chili paste, sauté for a minute.
- 4 Add the soaked chana dal, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the dal is cooked but still firm.
- 5 Add chopped coriander leaves, mix well, and remove from heat. Let it cool slightly.
- 6 In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add hot water, stirring continuously to form a smooth dough.
- 7 Divide the dough into small balls. Flatten each ball into a disc and place a spoonful of the chana dal filling in the center.
- 8 Fold the edges over the filling to form a semi-circle and seal the edges by pressing gently.
- 9 Steam the pitthas in a steamer for 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through.
- 10 Serve warm with chutney or sauce of your choice.
Tips
For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) while sautéing the spices.
