Ingredients

1 cup raw rice
1/2 cup black gram dal (urad dal)
1 cup jaggery
1 cup grated coconut
1 teaspoon cardamom powder
1 tablespoon ghee
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup water

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash and soak the rice and black gram dal separately for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the water and grind the rice and dal together into a smooth batter using a little water.
  3. 3 In a pan, melt the jaggery with a cup of water and strain to remove impurities.
  4. 4 Add the jaggery syrup to the batter and mix well.
  5. 5 Stir in the grated coconut, cardamom powder, and salt into the batter.
  6. 6 Grease a pan with ghee and pour the batter into it.
  7. 7 Cover the pan and steam the batter for about 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. 8 Allow the Podo Pitha to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Tips

For a richer taste, you can add a few cashew nuts and raisins to the batter before steaming.
