Ingredients
| 1 cup | black gram (urad dal) |
| 1 cup | water |
| 1 cup | basmati rice |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the black gram thoroughly and soak it in 1 cup of water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- 2 Drain the soaked black gram and set aside.
- 3 In a pressure cooker, add the soaked black gram, 1 cup of water, salt, and turmeric powder.
- 4 Cook the black gram on medium heat for about 15-20 minutes or until soft. Set aside.
- 5 Wash and soak the basmati rice in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes.
- 6 In a separate pot, bring the soaked rice and water to a boil.
- 7 Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice cook until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- 8 In a small pan, heat ghee over medium heat.
- 9 Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- 10 Add asafoetida and dried red chilies, and sauté for a few seconds.
- 11 Pour this tempering over the cooked black gram and mix well.
- 12 Serve the black gram curry (Ras) hot with the cooked rice (Bhaat), garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of mustard oil along with ghee in the tempering.
