Ingredients

1 cup black gram (urad dal)
1 cup water
1 cup basmati rice

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the black gram thoroughly and soak it in 1 cup of water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the soaked black gram and set aside.
  3. 3 In a pressure cooker, add the soaked black gram, 1 cup of water, salt, and turmeric powder.
  4. 4 Cook the black gram on medium heat for about 15-20 minutes or until soft. Set aside.
  5. 5 Wash and soak the basmati rice in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes.
  6. 6 In a separate pot, bring the soaked rice and water to a boil.
  7. 7 Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice cook until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  8. 8 In a small pan, heat ghee over medium heat.
  9. 9 Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  10. 10 Add asafoetida and dried red chilies, and sauté for a few seconds.
  11. 11 Pour this tempering over the cooked black gram and mix well.
  12. 12 Serve the black gram curry (Ras) hot with the cooked rice (Bhaat), garnished with chopped coriander leaves.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of mustard oil along with ghee in the tempering.
