Ingredients

2 cups jowar flour
1 cup water
salt to taste
2 tablespoons oil
1 cup toor dal

Instructions

  1. 1 In a large bowl, mix jowar flour with a pinch of salt.
  2. 2 Boil 1 cup of water and add it gradually to the flour, mixing with a spoon to form a dough.
  3. 3 Knead the dough well until smooth and divide it into equal portions.
  4. 4 Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it using a rolling pin to make thin rottis.
  5. 5 Heat a tawa (griddle) and cook each rotti on medium heat, flipping until both sides are cooked and slightly puffed.
  6. 6 For the curry, rinse the toor dal and pressure cook it with 3 cups of water until soft.
  7. 7 In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  8. 8 Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
  9. 9 Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and sambar powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  10. 10 Add the cooked dal to the pan along with tamarind paste and salt. Mix well.
  11. 11 Simmer the curry for 10-15 minutes, adding water if needed to adjust consistency.
  12. 12 Finish with curry leaves and chopped coriander.
  13. 13 Serve the hot rottis with the prepared toor dal curry.

Tips

To make the rottis softer, you can add a teaspoon of oil while kneading the dough.
