Ingredients
| 1 cup | black gram dal (urad dal) |
| 4 cups | water |
| 1/2 teaspoon | turmeric powder |
| 1 teaspoon | cumin seeds |
| 2 tablespoons | ghee |
| 1 teaspoon | red chili powder |
| 1 cup | buttermilk |
| 2 tablespoons | rice flour |
| — | salt to taste |
| 2 tablespoons | fresh coriander leaves, chopped |
Instructions
- 1 Wash the black gram dal thoroughly and soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- 2 Drain the water and grind the soaked dal into a coarse paste.
- 3 In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
- 4 Add the ground dal paste to the pan and sauté for a few minutes.
- 5 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
- 6 Pour in 4 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
- 7 Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 8 In a separate bowl, mix rice flour with buttermilk to make a smooth paste.
- 9 Add the rice flour paste to the simmering dal mixture and stir continuously to avoid lumps.
- 10 Cook for another 10 minutes until the mixture thickens to a soup-like consistency.
- 11 Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
Tips
Ensure the dal is soaked well to achieve the right texture. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary.
