Ingredients

1 cup black gram dal (urad dal)
4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoons ghee
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons rice flour
salt to taste
2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1 Wash the black gram dal thoroughly and soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. 2 Drain the water and grind the soaked dal into a coarse paste.
  3. 3 In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee and add cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  4. 4 Add the ground dal paste to the pan and sauté for a few minutes.
  5. 5 Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  6. 6 Pour in 4 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  7. 7 Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. 8 In a separate bowl, mix rice flour with buttermilk to make a smooth paste.
  9. 9 Add the rice flour paste to the simmering dal mixture and stir continuously to avoid lumps.
  10. 10 Cook for another 10 minutes until the mixture thickens to a soup-like consistency.
  11. 11 Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.

Tips

Ensure the dal is soaked well to achieve the right texture. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary.
