Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup water
1 cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. 1 In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2 In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.
  3. 3 Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. 4 Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. 5 Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. 6 Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope about 20 inches long.
  7. 7 Fold each rope in half, twist it, and form a ring by pressing the ends together.
  8. 8 In a shallow bowl, mix molasses and water. Dip each ring into the molasses mixture, then coat with sesame seeds.
  9. 9 Place the rings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. 10 Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. 11 Let cool slightly before serving.

Tips

For a richer flavor, you can toast the sesame seeds lightly before coating the simit.
