Ingredients

1 cup rice flour
1 cup water
1 teaspoon ghee
1 pinch salt
1 cup fresh grated coconut
1 cup jaggery
1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon chopped nuts (cashews, almonds)

Instructions

  1. 1 In a pan, heat the water with a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of ghee until it comes to a boil.
  2. 2 Reduce the heat to low and add the rice flour gradually, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  3. 3 Cover the pan and let the mixture steam for about 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat.
  4. 4 Transfer the dough to a plate and knead it while it's warm until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth.
  5. 5 For the filling, heat a pan and roast the poppy seeds lightly until aromatic.
  6. 6 Add the grated coconut and jaggery to the pan, stirring continuously until the jaggery melts and mixes well with the coconut.
  7. 7 Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts, mix well, and cook for another 2 minutes. Let it cool.
  8. 8 Divide the dough into small balls. Flatten each ball into a small disc using your fingers.
  9. 9 Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the disc.
  10. 10 Bring the edges together to form a pleated shape and seal the top to make a modak shape.
  11. 11 Steam the modaks in a steamer for about 10-12 minutes until they appear glossy.

Tips

Ensure the dough is kneaded well to avoid cracks in the modaks. Use fresh coconut for authentic flavor.
